Your start in the Montafon

Legendary to Switzerland and back again

Classic round tour with skis

Not only a border crossing, but also long powder descents and a ride on the Rhaetian Railway make the Madrisa round tour something very special. The circumnavigation of the 2,826-metre-high summit group in the Rätikon is one of the highlights for ski touring enthusiasts in the Montafon.

This easy day tour takes skiers in good physical condition along old smugglers' routes from Austria to Switzerland and back again. Once you've done it, you'll be raving about it for a long time to come. The Madrisa round tour, which has been around for more than 50 years, is one of the absolute classics among ski tours in the Montafon.

With an ascent of just under 350 meters, participants enjoy around 2,500 meters of fantastic descents, over 2,000 meters of which are through glorious powder snow. The tour also allows participants to observe ibexes, chamois and eagles in their natural habitat.

08:15 am Valley station (ticket office area) of the Schafbergbahn in Gargellen

The starting point for the Madrisa circular tour is the Schafbergbahn valley station in Gargellen. The tour ticket, which is also valid in Klosters in Switzerland, takes you up to the ski area. After a short descent down the piste, the Kristallbahn continues uphill. After a short descent along the piste, we reach the Anfellplatz for our ascent to the St. Antönier Joch (2,379 m). First flat, then a little steeper towards the end, we climb 250 meters up to the Swiss border. Once at the top, we switch to downhill mode and enjoy the view and the wonderful slopes down to St. Antönien in Switzerland. We continue by bus and the Rhaetian Railway to the ski resort of Klosters. Here we also use the cable cars, shortening our ascent to the Schlappiner Joch (2,203 m) to around 200 meters in altitude. From here, it's a long descent over moderately steep slopes down into the Valzifenztal valley and back to the starting point in Gargellen. Here we can reflect on what we have experienced during a leisurely stop for refreshments.

If the conditions do not allow a risk-conscious execution of the Madrisa round tour, the mountain guide will try to find a suitable alternative tour program on site. As soon as the safety of the group can no longer be guaranteed due to the weather conditions, the tour will be postponed.

Due to longer crossings, the tour is not suitable for snowboarders.
