Flying drones in the Montafon
As the number of drones in circulation is constantly increasing, we have tried to summarize the most important links and information about flying drones here. Drones are becoming increasingly popular in the leisure sector. For this reason, drones are increasingly found in the backpacks of mountain sports enthusiasts. However, the whirring aircraft can disturb and endanger other people and, above all, grazing and wild animals.
The experience of nature and the safety of other mountain sports enthusiasts, the integrity of flora and fauna must not be impaired by the use of drones. We therefore ask you to refrain from flying drones.
Since 2021, new, Europe-wide uniform rules for drone use have also applied in Austria. You can find out what is permitted, which category your drone falls under and whether registration or a drone license is required at https://www.oeamtc.at/thema/drohnen/
In principle, the following applies:
- Mandatory online registration for the operator of a drone.
- Mandatory liability insurance for every aircraft.
- No persons or property may be endangered, the distance to uninvolved persons is clearly defined depending on the category.
- If aircraft approach, the drone must be landed immediately.
- There is a general ban on flying near airports, military facilities and many nature reserves - the ÖAMTC drone info app can be helpful here.
- The operating times of Schenk Air (Schruns/Tschagguns area - see app):
- Winter season: during daylight hours, as soon as the first ski lifts open for the season. Duration: until the last day of the season.
- Summer season: you may fly here as long as there is no aircraft in the vicinity.
- Obtain a permit: If your drone has to be operated in this area for a specific reason during operating hours, you must obtain a permit from Schenk Air.
- Drone flying is prohibited in the Verwall and Wiegensee European nature reserves.
- At Lake Lünersee, you are requested to refrain from flying drones so as not to disturb nature and other visitors (more information here)
- More detailed information on the general legal aspects can be found on the Alpine Club and ÖAMTC website.
