Bartholomäberg in Vorarlberg

Bartholomäberg impresses with a culture dating back more than 4,000 years and a fascinating settlement history. As the cradle of the Montafon , every corner tells of its eventful past. But perhaps the most valuable thing you will find here is something else - peace and quiet. A tranquillity that invites you to go your own way, switch off and recharge your batteries.

In summer, you hike across flowering meadows, past traditional Maisäß houses, always accompanied by views of the impressive Rätikon, Silvretta and Verwall mountain ranges. In winter, strap on your snowshoes and make your way through untouched nature. The variety of snowshoe and winter hiking trails is unique in Vorarlberg. And with the most hours of sunshine in the valley, Bartholomäberg rightly bears its name - the sunny balcony of the Montafon.

Alpine mosaic Montafon

Three mountain ranges frame the Montafon: the tranquil Verwall, the adventurous Silvretta and the diverse Rätikon. In between lies the lively valley - the heart of this unique mountain world. These four adventure areas are the main protagonists of the innovative hiking trail concept "Alpenmosaik Montafon". It invites you to discover the Montafon with all its facets and get to know it better with every step.

What is now a hiking paradise was an inhospitable, wild landscape with primeval forests and extreme weather conditions thousands of years ago. And yet people left their mark here early on - especially on the Bartholomäberg, where the oldest evidence of settlement activity in the valley can be found.

Did you know that...

a research team from Goethe University Frankfurt a. M. has been carrying out excavations in Bartholomäberg since 2000?

Bartholomäberg - the oldest settlement in the valley - has a fascinating and eventful past. "The 'treasures' hidden in the ground are important historical sources for reconstructing the lives of early people and the Montafon people," explains Dr. Rüdiger Krause, professor at Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main. He and his team have been intensively researching traces of the past here since 2000.

And the results are impressive: mining was already being carried out in the Montafon 3,500 years ago - much earlier than previously assumed. Thanks to C14 dating, the researchers were able to detect traces of miningfrom the Middle Bronze Age on the Bartholomäberg at an altitude of 1,450 meters. This makes the area one of the oldest known mining areas in the European high mountains. A discovery that Dr. Krause describes as "a minor sensation" - as Bronze Age mining in the Montafon was previously considered unlikely.
