Drones flying in Montafon

As the number of drones in circulation continues to rise, we have attempted to summarise the most important links and information on the subject of flying drones here. Drones are becoming increasingly popular for recreational use. For this reason, drones are increasingly found in the rucksacks of mountaineers. However, these buzzing flying devices can disturb and endanger other people, but above all grazing animals and wildlife.

The experience of nature and the safety of other mountaineers, as well as the integrity of flora and fauna, must not be compromised by the use of drones. We therefore ask that you refrain from flying drones.

Since 2021, new, Europe-wide uniform rules for drone use have also been in force in Austria. You can find out what is permitted, which category your drone falls into, and whether registration or a drone licence is required at: https://www.oeamtc.at/thema/drohnen/

As a general rule:

  • Mandatory online registration for drone operators.
  • Mandatory liability insurance for every aircraft.
  • No persons or property may be endangered; the distance to uninvolved persons is clearly defined depending on the category.
  • If aircraft approach, the drone must be landed immediately.
  • A general flight ban applies in the vicinity of airports, military installations and many nature reserves – the ÖAMTC drone info app can be helpful here.
  • Schenk Air operating hours (Schruns/Tschagguns area – see app):
  • Winter season: During daylight hours, as soon as the first ski lifts open for the season. Duration: until the last day of the season.
  • Summer season: flying is permitted here as long as there are no aircraft in the vicinity.
  • Obtaining permission: If your drone needs to be operated in this area during operating hours for a specific reason, you must obtain permission from Schenk Air.
  • Drone flying is prohibited in the European protected areas of Verwall and Wiegensee.
  • At Lünersee, please refrain from flying drones so as not to disturb nature and other visitors (further information here).
  • More detailed information on the general legal aspects can be found on the Alpenverein and ÖAMTC websites.
